In late December 2019, the World Health Organization and Chinese public health officials have collaborated and reported a series of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, for unknown reasons. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), influenza and other common respiratory pathogens were initially negative.

 

On 7 January, a new coronavirus strain, currently known as novel coronavirus (2019-nCoC), was isolated from patient samples and the gene sequence was shared to accelerate the development of diagnostic reagents.
