CityU received 284 Precious Items of Professor Jao's Works from Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole

On 7th August, City University of Macau received 183 sets of precious collections donated by Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong. With a total of 284 books, the collections are mainly about Professor Jao Tsung-I’s works and books related to Professor Jao’s studies. The donation includes 113 academic books, covering a wide spectrum of different disciplines, including literature, religion, philosophy, folklores, poetry, musicology, essays, historical materials, archaeology, and studies of qin; 70 books in art, mainly about calligraphy and painting.

 

Professor Jao was renowned for his academic achievements and knowledge, and he was highly esteemed in Eastern and Western academic world as the "Master of Chinese Studies". He was devoted to the academic research of Chinese traditional culture, and had about 80 publications, more than a thousand scholarly papers and articles. He had outstanding achievements and contributions in the fields of humanities such as history, literature, language, religion, philosophy, art, and Sino-foreign cultural relations. As the most influential master in Chinese classic studies in a contemporary context, Professor Jao excelled at gushi, lüshi, jeuju, as well as sao, fu, pian, prose. He was a profound scholar in art as well and he created his own style in calligraphy and paintings. He also had musical pursuit, especially in guqin.

 

In the early 1980s, Professor Jao served as a Chair Professor of the School of Arts in the University of East Asia, the predecessor of the City University of Macau, and established the Department of Chinese Literature and History for the Graduate School. Professor Jao has been supportive to the cultural affair of Macau, and has initiated research on Macao history. Among the books donated are precious collections such as the history of Macau literature, folk religions and historical sites of Macau.

 

The precious collections donated by the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of the University of Hong Kong have high academic and artistic value. They will greatly enrich our library's books on Chinese studies, expand and enhance the study and research of our readers in this field.
